Low Fat Turkey “Shepard’s Pie”

So the story behind this dish is super chaotic, like most of my kitchen adventures :)
I was planning on making meatloaf with the ground turkey, but in the last minute I really didn’t feel like having this for dinner, so I had to come up with something else.
I started googeling for a Shepard’s pie , but could only find recipes with ridiculous amounts of fat and ingredients I just didn’t have at home. Another problem was, that I actually wanted hamburger – but had no buns! Pure drama in this kitchen, I am telling you!
So I started making this dish without any recipe nor any clue of what would be the result! 45 minutes later I had this amazing tasting Turkey Shepard’s Pie, spiced with hamburger spice, using only 1 tablespoon butter! I don’t want to brag, but this is a keeper!

Low Fat Turkey "Shepard's Pie"

What you need
  • 1 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups veggies (I used broccoli and peas)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ cup chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon Worcester sauce
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1-2 tablespoons hamburger spice
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • ¾ cups shredded cheese, fat reduced, divided
How you make it
  1. Preheat your oven to 395°F
  2. Spray a 8 inch baking pan with cooking spray
  3. Combine hot mashed potatoes (either homemade or from a box) with ¼ cup of the shredded cheese, set aside
  4. Bring butter in a large saucepan over high heat
  5. Saute onions until tender
  6. Add ground turkey and cook until no pink spots are left
  7. Add veggies, turn heat down to medium, cook for 2 minutes
  8. Add chicken stock, Worcester sauce, garlic and hamburger spice
  9. Cook for 10 minutes (until all liquid is absorbed)
  10. Transfer into baking dish
  11. Spread mashed potatoes over it
  12. Sprinkle with remaining cheese
  13. Bake for 30 minutes
  14. Place on plate, but wait at least 5 minutes before serving (the mashed potatoes keep it so hot, you don't want to burn your families mouth)
