German Cinnamon Stars (Christmas Cookies)

german cinnamon stars christmas cookies recipe

This recipe for my German Cinnamon Stars is the original recipe from my grandpa – and he got it from his mother! So we are talking about a authentic, original piece of family history!

These cookies melt in your mouth and I am pretty much begging you to bake them, because they are so unbelievably amazing. They literally melt in your mouth, the seconds you start eating them!

The cookies will come out very soft, but that is normal, so don’t worry 😉
You will be so surprised how those 5 ingredients turn into THE BEST Christmas cookies you will ever have! (My Promise)!

German Cinnamon Stars (Christmas Cookies)
Recipe type: Dessert
What you need
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar **
  • 7 ounces walnuts, grounded
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon lemon juice
How you make it
  1. In a medium bowl combine the powdered sugar and egg whites with an electric mixer until fluffy
  2. In a large bowl combine grounded nuts, cinnamon, lemon juice and ⅔ of the sugar mixture
  3. Knead until well combined
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour
  5. Preheat you oven to 305°F
  6. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
  7. Press the dough about ½ inch thin (you can't roll the dough, so you have to work with your hands)
  8. Now dip your star shaped cookie cutter in powdered sugar and cut out one cookie at a time (always dipping in powdered sugar between each cookie)
  9. Gently place the cookies on the baking sheet
  10. Brush all cookies with the remaining sugar mixture
  11. Bake for 12 minutes, but open the oven with a wooden spoon after 8 minutes (wooden spoon stuck in the oven door)
  12. Let cool completely before transferring into a container
**since this is a generation recipe, it uses homemade powdered sugar. You will be fine with normal powdered sugar, but if you want to, try it with homemade one. Simply put normal white sugar in a grinder and pulse until it's powdery ;)
